Making Patterns
Patterns can be used to decorate an image. There are many patterns that you can make but in this tutorial i will show you how to make 3. I'm going to use the image below to test my patterns on.

The first pattern i'll be making is a simple diagonal scanline.
1. Create a new document, 4x4 pixels.
2. Select the Pencil tool (if you can't see it, right click on the brush tool). Your pencil should be 1px. Make sure the colour in your pallet is black, too.
3. Now zoom in.
4. Make the pattern below with your pencil.
5. Now go to File>Define Pattern. A window show pop up, asking you to name your pattern. Name it and then click ok. Now we're going to put the pattern on the image.
6. Open up your image. 7. Go to the layers window, right click and select 'Blending Options'. A window should pop up.
8. On the left side, find the tab labelled 'Pattern Overlay' and click on it. It should automatically tick and take you to the pattern overlay options.
9. Click on the preview of the square pattern.
10. Find the pattern you just saved and click on it.
11. Your settings should look like this:
12. Click OK.
13. If the lines are too dark, change the opacity by going back to the blending options and clicking on the pattern overlay tab.
Your image should look something like this:
Okie dokie. Lets make our next pattern. This pattern is going to be a grid. 1. Create a new document, 5x5 pixels.
2. Repeat steps 2-12. (Step 4. Make a pattern like the one below.)

Your image should look something like this: (I changed the opacity to 30%)
The last pattern we are going to make is dotted one.
1. Create a new document, 3x3 pixels.
2. Repeat steps 2-12. (Step 4. Make a pattern like the one below.)

Your image should look something like this:
